Many of our safety and health rules require employers to follow manufacturer's instructions when their employees use equipment, handle materials, or do other tasks involving manufactured items.
Here are a few examples:

1910.28(d)(14) "Periodic inspections shall be made of all welded frames and accessories, and any maintenance, including painting, or minor corrections authorized by the manufacturer."
1910.29 (b)(5) Erection. "Only the manufacturer of a scaffold or his qualified designated agent shall be permitted to erect or supervise the erection of scaffolds exceeding 50 feet in height above the base, unless such structure is approved in writing by a registered professional engineer, or erected in accordance with instructions furnished by the manufacturer."

1910.243 (d)(4)(v) "In case of a misfire, the operator shall hold the tool in the operating position for at least 30 seconds. The operator shall then try to operate the tool a second time. 1910.262 (y)(1)(iv) Maximum allowable speed. "Each centrifugal extractor shall be effectively secured in position on the floor or foundation so as to eliminate unnecessary vibration, and should not be operated at a speed greater than the manufacturer's rating, which shall be stamped where easily visible in letters not less than 1/4-inch in height."
1910.265 (c)(25)(i) Safe usage. "Ropes, cables, slings, and chains shall be used in accordance with safe use practices recommended by the manufacturer or within safe limits recommended by the equipment manufacturer when used in conjunction with it."
1910.268 (j)(4)(iv)(F) "The employer shall ensure that the derrick and its associated equipment are inspected by a competent person at intervals set by the manufacturer but in no case less than once per year."
